Reborn Sailing School Ship Spirit of South Carolina embarks on ocean voyage

The state’s Tall Ship Spirit of South Carolina is reborn; its mission as a school ship is renewed.

Early Saturday morning (25 June) the ship will depart Charleston for an ocean voyage to New England waters where it will embark on a summer of adventure education sails for both young people and, later in the summer, for all ages. Details about these programs may be obtained from Ashley Bridges (

After a thorough US Coast Guard inspection, lead marine inspector John Doughten told Charleston’s Post and Courier, “The ship was inspected and found in excellent shape. The crew performed well and displayed a high level of competency during all drills.”

The ship’s first port visit will take it to the famed Mystic Seaport Museum where it will proudly fly the South Carolina flag and explore educational opportunities with the museum. In early July the ship will shift to a high visibility berth in downtown Boston from which it will begin its Teen Summer Camp programs. It will also explore corporate partnerships with a number of national companies based in or with major offices in Boston.

The major effort to reinvigorate South Carolina’s Tall Ship has been spearheaded by Tommy Baker and Michael Bennett who have remained keenly focused on the mission of keeping this majestic vessel as the state’s sailing ambassador and singular adventure education resource for young people.
