About the event

On June 28, 1776, a British naval assault on Charleston Harbor was turned back in a battle that shaped the course of the Revolution in the South. The waterways themselves helped determine the outcome.

During the first week of SC250 programming, the Spirit of South Carolina is open for free public tours dockside at The Cooper hotel. The vessel is portraying HMS RANGER for these events, with historical reenactors and the ship's historian aboard to walk visitors through the Battle of Sullivan's Island, its significance in the war for independence, and how the harbor's channels, shoals, and tidal patterns factored into the British defeat.

Free and open to the public as part of SC250 programming.
